Lamanai – Submerged Crocoddile

The Lamanai site is one of the oldest continuously occupied Maya sites in Belize, from about 1500 BC when maize was being grown at the site, to 1680 AD. The name “Lamanai” means submerged insect.

However, archaeologists realized in 1978 that Franciscan monks had corrupted the name from “Lam’an/ayin” to “Lamanai,” and that adding the correct suffix of “ayin” changed the meaning of the name to submerged crocodile, a conclusion supported by the large number of crocodile representations found at Lamanai, including figurines, pottery decorations and the headdress of a 13-foot limestone mask found on a 6th-century temple platform.

In addition to Mayan buildings and artifacts, the Lamanai site also includes the remains of a 19th-century sugar mill, a brick-lined reservoir, and the charred remains of two 16th-century Catholic churches. The church remains are charred because the Maya burned each of them down after the Spanish built the churches in an attempt to convert the Maya inhabitants of Lamanai to Catholicism. The first church building particularly incensed the Maya — the Spanish built the church on the foundations of a Mayan temple that they demolished to make way for the new church.

Lamanai continued to flourish in the Post Classic Period primarily because of its trade of metals, particularly copper objects, thought to have been produced on-site at Lamanai beginning by approximately 1150 AD. More copper artifacts have been found at Lamanai than at any other Mayan site, and the artifacts have included bells, rings, tweezers, various clothing ornaments, pins, axes, chisels, needles, and fishhooks.

The day trip to Lamanai begins at 5:45 am with pick-up at your resort. We then have breakfast in San Pedro town, then take either a 6:30 am water taxi to Belize City which is an Hour and a half ride, or a 7 am flight to Belize City which is a 15-minute flight. In Belize City, you are then picked up by your Professional guides. You then enjoy a 1-hour drive north of Belize City to a mestizo village named Carmelita. From there you exit your tour vehicle and board your speed boat as you take your beautiful river tour up the New River to the Mayan Site of Lamanai. On your river tour, you sometimes encounter crocodiles, spiders, howler monkeys, and distinct species of birds. Upon arriving at the Mayan site, you head straight to enjoy your fresh cook Belizean lunch, rice, and beans with stew chicken and vegetable salad.

After lunch, your guided tour of the Ancient Mayan City begins. The temples are built a little distance apart so you will be on short hiking trails through the rainforest as you view our beautiful flora that leads you to the different temples. Your guide will be doing the full history of that Ancient City, what each temple was used for, and its importance for the Mayas. Upon completing your tour at the site, you will have a short stop at the gift shop if you are interested in gift items.

You then board your boat and cruise back to the little village where you hop back in your tour vehicle and drive back to Belize City. From Belize City, you take your water taxi or flight back to San Pedro. In San Pedro, you will be met by one of our representatives who will ensure that you have your transportation back to your resort.

Derek gave us an unforgettable experience! My husband and I are staying at the Belizean Shores Resort and booked a last minute snorkeling trip to the Mexico rocks and to swim with the nurse sharks and sting rays closer to the barrier reef. Derek was our guide. He was so informational, funny and went out of his way to show us a turtle and point out everything. We could not recommend Derek and Tuff E Nuff tours more. This was an unforgettable experience. I did not have a water camera. I kind of wish I did but it was also nice to not worry about photographing everything and just living in the moment.

A lifetime experience we won't forget! My sister and I took the 3 in 1 Xunantunich Mayan Temple, Zip Lining, and Cave Tubing tour on the Mainland of Belize from our accommodations in San Pedro and we are glad we did! It was an amazing day full of adventures and the crew from Tuff E Nuff Tours made it so much fun, easy and comfortable! We didn't have to worry about or plan anything! "Breeze" picked us up at our location, took us to pick up local made breakfast to order and drove us to the airport, assuring we safely boarded our flight to the mainland. He was very personable and informed us on what we were to expect for the entire trip. When we arrived at the airport in Belize City, Landen (aka Tahoe) met us and took us on our entire journey, providing a selection of beverages and an adventurous day we sure had! He was very informative about the history of Belize, the areas/towns and sites we were driving through along the way and made us feel very comfortable and excited about what we were about to experience. Both Breeze and Tahoe were very personable and obviously experienced in taking tourists (with no idea what to expect) through the day, which was magical! Tahoe gave us a thorough tour of the Mayan ruins and we learned so much! We stopped for local made chicken, rice/beans and egg/potato salad on the go that was EXCEPTIONAL from Miss Karen, which was an experience in itself. Next we did some ziplining in the rainforest and our guides were super friendly, very experienced and made us not only very comfortable/safe but made us laugh. They even took pictures for us of us along the way so we had the memories. It was a real treat and would absolutely recommend! Lastly, we went cave tubing and since we had so idea what to expect, it had very much exceeded our expectations and was my sister's favorite part of the day. I really thought all three activities were remarkable. The staff all around was experienced, easy and pleasant to spend time with and absolutely made our day amazing. You can tell they love what they do. Tahoe took the time to point out the flora and fauna along the way and explained many interesting things along our adventures that added the extra-mile touch. Book this trip with them, it will be your favorite day in Belize!

Cave tubing Breesy picked us up and took us to get breakfast and then to the airport. He was super friendly and made sure we got on the plane alright, and was there to greet us when we got back. Taho was our cave guide. He was very informative and very friendly. Great guy and guide. He also made sure that we got on our plane back to San Pedro. I would definitely recommend this company for tours.

Best day! Our driver to the airport was a young and cool young man named Breese. He took great care of us until our flight left for Belize City. Tahoe was our tour guide. He picked us up, drove us to the cave which was hour away. Tahoe was informative about the life on the island. He stayed with us through the 30 minute hike to the cave, did the cave tubing with us and pointed out so much detail about the island and cave! Tahoe also stayed with us at the airport for an hour waiting for our plane to return to San Pedro. We couldn’t have asked for a better tour guide, thank you!

Always a time in San Pedro I will never come to San Pedro, and never not coordinate with Rico for an amazing catamaran experience! I’ve been doing this for the past 5 years and my only regret is not meeting his crews sooner! An amazing time is ALWAYS had! This time his crew helped us create the perfect atmosphere for my best friend to get proposed to, I'm forever grateful! His crews are hilarious, they love to dance and they know how to have a great time. The lobster ceviche is calling my name already! 10/10 highly recommended. If you are having trouble, don’t cheat yourself, treat yourself, book the catamaran.

Highly recommend this family friendly tour company. Great snorkeling tours. Our family took 2 1/2 day tours w/ Tuff E Nuff. Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley, we had Cady and Jamil, who were both great. There was 1 other family on the trip but it felt like a private tour bc they split us into two groups for snorkeling. Jamil and Cady were very knowledgeable and good with the kids (we had a 10, 11, and 14yo, the other group had 2 small kids too). We saw green sea turtles, lots of different fish, nurse sharks, an eagle ray, southern rays, and more. Our 2nd tour was México Rocks and Stingray City with Derek. We ended up being the only ones on the tour. There was only 1 other boat at Mexico Rocks, so we also had the reef practically to ourselves. Our 11yo had a hard time w his mask (his fault, not the equipment), and Derek was very reassuring, popped him into the life ring and fixed the issue as we floated over the reef. We saw 2 turtles there as well as many tropical fish. At stingray city, we were surrounded by nurse sharks and curious stingrays. Derek was great with the kids and very knowledgeable. The 1/2 day tours were the perfect length for us with kids (about 2.5-3 hours). I only wish we had more time on this trip to do a few more snorkeling tours with this company.

XUNANTUNICH We had an incredible experience with Tuff E Nuff Tours! From the moment we arrived, Breezy made everything so easy and stress free. He has such a great sense of humor and kept everyone laughing while making sure we had everything we needed. Between the amazing food, beautiful scenery, and fun atmosphere, it was a day we’ll never forget. A huge thank you to Shilo as well! He was an outstanding tour guide who helped us every step of the way. He made sure everyone felt comfortable, knew where to go, and had a great time throughout the entire tour. His professionalism and friendly personality really stood out. If you’re visiting Belize, I highly recommend booking with Tuff E Nuff Tours.
